CFA mock exam scores: how to judge readiness

A mock score is useful, but it is not a verdict. Its meaning depends on the conditions, the reasons behind mistakes, whether the result is repeatable, and how much time remains to act on it.

Short answer

No single CFA mock score guarantees a pass. Interpret the percentage alongside topic mix, timing, confidence, miss reasons, testing conditions, repeatability, and the time left to repair what the mock exposed.

Why one score is incomplete

Mock difficulty, question mix, conditions, and candidate preparation vary. CFA Institute does not provide candidates with a single fixed mock percentage that guarantees a pass. Use current official guidance for exam policies and treat third-party thresholds with caution.

A score becomes more useful when it is compared with earlier results under similar conditions and broken down into the topics and mistakes that produced it.

Understand what sits behind the percentage

Start by identifying which high-impact topics contributed most to lost scores. Then separate gaps in knowledge from mistakes in applying it. A candidate who knew the method but ran out of time needs a different plan from one who guessed correctly without understanding.

  • Accuracy by topic and the weight of each topic in the result.
  • Confidence on correct and incorrect answers.
  • Time pressure, unanswered items, and rushed decisions.
  • Concept, recall, calculation, interpretation, and misread errors.

Choose the next action

Do not automatically take another full mock. If the first result exposed one unclear concept, revisit and retest it. If timing broke down across the session, work on pacing. If the result is inconsistent, complete a targeted set before making a large plan change.

A full mock takes significant time. Use it when a broad, exam-like result will change the readiness decision, not merely because the calendar says so.

Look for repeatable progress

Passing-range readiness should be supported by more than one favourable result. Look for stable performance across mixed material and realistic conditions, with enough time to repair remaining gaps. Compare that progress with exam day and keep uncertainty clear.

Turn one percentage into a better next decision

This is an early interpretation. It does not assume a universal passing score or predict your exam result.

The score is encouraging, but there is little room for error

Prioritise the most important reason for your mistakes and retest it before adding another full mock.

With 6 weeks remaining, the most useful next step is to work on the weakness this score exposed and test it again.
